Should Researchers Write Papers for AI Instead of People?

A group of researchers argues that scientific papers should be replaced by a format designed for AI agents, called 'Agent-Native Research Artifact' (ARA). They claim that human-written papers lose 80% of the information about the research process. In May, 37 researchers from top universities and tech companies published a paper titled 'The Last Human-Written Paper' on ArXiv, arguing that scientists should stop writing traditional papers because AI agents are becoming autonomous participants in research. They propose a new format, 'Agent-Native Research Artifact' (ARA), which presents work in a way AI agents can use efficiently. Lead author Jiachen Liu, who recently cofounded the Agent Native Research Lab, said the traditional paper has two flaws: a 'storytelling tax' that loses 80% of the information about the work, and an 'engineering tax' that makes it impossible to reproduce the work due to missing details. Liu's ARA system includes a 'Live Research Manager' that automatically observes and documents research progress. To prevent hallucinations in AI, Liu is working on a formal system using neurosymbolic techniques that would make every claim self-consistent. She also believes that once AI has learned all expert knowledge, it will self-evolve without human input, and that younger scientists will learn from AI.
