OpenAI has experienced a wave of executive departures, intensifying leadership turmoil as the company seeks to justify its $852 billion valuation and prepare for an initial public offering. Last week, COO Brad Lightcap announced his departure to start his own venture; his responsibilities were handed to revenue chief Denise Dresser, who resigned just two days later. Dresser had joined from Slack in December. The exodus of talent has put pressure on CEO Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman, with employees demanding stability and investors worried about competition from Anthropic and Google, fast-progressing Chinese open-weights models, and recent SpaceX stock volatility. Brockman downplayed concerns, noting that Dresser oversaw revenue during a formative period and that her successor Dali Rajic will help build a full system to make AI useful. OpenAI also lost marketing head Kate Rouch in April and Fidji Simo in July, both for health reasons, plus three other leaders including VP of Science Kevin Weil in April. Dresser had previously worked at Salesforce for over a decade; she was tasked with growing OpenAI's high-margin corporate unit, which directly competes with Anthropic. According to Brockman, July revenue grew 20% month-over-month, with corporate segment up 32%. CFO Sarah Friar told investors that corporate revenue now exceeds consumer revenue, thanked Dresser, and dismissed concerns about Chinese open models. The corporate business has grown to 2 million clients, double from a year ago. CNBC reports that some investors view the chaos as part of OpenAI's culture, with two anonymous employees confirming rapid hiring and firing is normal. Even CEO Altman was briefly ousted in 2023 and later reinstated, an incident discussed during his lawsuit with Elon Musk, which Musk lost but plans to appeal.
