An SEO specialist's analysis reveals that ChatGPT mentions brands based on context and reputation, not link counts. With 92.8% of AI dialogues ending without clicks, marketers should focus on brand mentions rather than traditional link building.
An SEO specialist measured how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Alisa AQI, and GigaChat mention brands in responses. In a test for a food delivery client, ChatGPT frequently mentioned a competitor despite the client having more backlinks and higher authority. This contradicts traditional SEO logic where more links lead to higher rankings and more mentions. Data from Profound, analyzed by Kevin Indig, shows that 92.8% of ChatGPT dialogues end without a click, meaning users decide based on the model's answer itself. While AI traffic is small (0.19% of clicks vs 42% for Google), those who do click convert at 7.1% and are valued 4.4 times higher. Brand mentions in AI are built from training texts and real-time sources, not link counts. The specialist found that strong editorial reviews mattered more than numerous catalog links. Even ranking first in Google doesn't guarantee a mention in ChatGPT. Links still work where decisions happen after the first touch, like price comparisons or technical docs, but fail where answers are self-contained. The specialist now tracks brand mention share among competitors, tone of mention, and sources behind formulations. For the food delivery client, they created in-depth articles on platforms the model reads, and mentions improved within a month and a half.
