Silicon Valley is excited about AI agents, but most people have never used one. According to Josh Miller, CEO of The Browser Company, AI agents are a technology, not a standalone product, and the industry needs to build products people actually want. Despite high adoption among some users, agents represent a tiny fraction of the usage compared to chatbots.
In a viral X post, Josh Miller, CEO of The Browser Company, pointed out that nobody is really using AI agents, despite the tech being ready to transform work and life. Miller, who has a background in product development and was the White House's first director of product, argues that AI agents are an invented frame by the industry. He notes that The Browser Company's most popular feature is a personalized morning briefing in its AI-powered browser Dia, which technically uses an AI agent but doesn't require users to know that. He criticizes the industry for groupthink, mentioning that most AI labs cited the movie 'Her' as their vision. While OpenAI's Codex and ChatGPT Work have about 10 million weekly users, and Anthropic's Claude Code and Cowork show similar adoption, this is minor compared to chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini with around a billion monthly active users. Miller hopes his message resonates with founders and product builders, encouraging them to question the narrative of AI agents and create joyful, useful products.
