Ecovacs Opensources Its Embodied AI Robot: Not Humanoid, But Tackling Real Problems
Ecovacs, the parent company of the Ecovacs robot vacuum brand, has fully open-sourced its embodied AI robot called 'Bajie'. Unlike the current trend of humanoid robots, Bajie is a wheeled platform with a six-axis arm designed for practical home tasks like toy tidying, shoe organization, and clothes handling. The company has also established a physical 'Bajie Open-Source Intelligent Space' in Suzhou, offering free access to hardware, software, and low-level system code for developers, students, and researchers.
Ecovacs, known for its robotic vacuum cleaners, has opened up its entire embodied AI robot platform, named 'Bajie'. The robot is not humanoid; it consists of a silent wheeled base, a six-degree-of-freedom arm with 800mm reach, a height-adjustable body, and dual RK3588 SoCs capable of running a 7B-parameter LLM locally. The open-source offering includes hardware (arm, gripper, UV cleaner, tray), software (system source code, AI agents OpenClaw and Hermes), and multiple access layers: natural language commands for non-coders, C++/Python SDKs for developers, SSH/serial/ROS2 for researchers, and a customizable base for enterprises. The robot is initially aimed at early-adopter Ecovacs vacuum users, targeting tasks like toy storage, shoe organization, laundry assistance, and table cleaning. Ecovacs chairman Qian Dongqi explained the decision to avoid humanoid form, citing practical concerns like noise and safety, and emphasized a 'tool first' approach. The company believes embodied AI is not yet at a 'ChatGPT moment' and that open collaboration is needed to advance real-world environment perception and adaptation.
