Time magazine now serves different content to AI crawlers, including ads hidden from human readers. The ads aim to influence AI search results. The Register discovered this via a German programmer's blog post.
Time magazine has begun showing advertisements to AI-powered search bots that human visitors cannot see. German freelance programmer Vincent Schmalbach discovered that Time's website delivers different versions of pages: HTML for humans and Markdown for AI crawlers, with the Markdown versions containing sponsored content like FAQ sections and brand facts. The ads are marked as sponsored content and are present in pages about special projects, not news articles. Schmalbach found that while Google's crawler gets the HTML version, ClaudeBot, OAI-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot receive the modified Markdown versions, while GPTBot and ChatGPT-User are blocked with HTTP 406 errors. The Register confirmed that by spoofing User-Agent headers, humans can view the AI-targeted pages, which contain ads from Ally Bank. Time has been partnering with Mobian since June 2026 to adapt ads for AI agents, and both companies confirmed they are working on more such projects. The move raises concerns about distinguishing relevant AI search results from manipulated content.
