Snake Robots Searched for Survivors Under Rubble After Venezuela Earthquake

Snake robots were deployed to search for survivors in collapsed buildings after Venezuela's double earthquake disaster. These robots, developed by Carnegie Mellon University, could squeeze through tight spaces that rescuers and equipment could not reach, extending the visual reach of rescue workers.
In the aftermath of Venezuela's double earthquake on June 24, which killed over 5,000 people and left 16,740 injured, snake robots were used to search for survivors among the rubble. Developed by Howie Choset's team at Carnegie Mellon University's Biorobotics Lab, these 4-foot-long modular robots could be controlled via a video game controller and laptop. The robots' autonomous software coordinates body segments for movement, allowing them to access confined spaces. This technology was first tested in search and rescue after the 2017 Mexico City earthquake.
