OpenAI calls Apple trade secrets lawsuit 'rotten to its core'

OpenAI has asked a federal judge to dismiss Apple's lawsuit that accuses the ChatGPT maker of stealing trade secrets. In a motion filed to dismiss the complaint, OpenAI argues that Apple is mischaracterizing employee actions as theft and treating generic development information as trade secrets, adding that Apple made no reasonable efforts to maintain secrecy. The lawsuit was filed by Apple in July, alleging that former Apple employees who moved to OpenAI stole confidential documents to further OpenAI's hardware plans. OpenAI's legal rebuttal follows a blog post titled 'Apple is getting this wrong,' and the filing claims the case is poorly investigated and 'rotten to its core.' OpenAI contends that Chang Liu, a former Apple employee now at OpenAI, was just helping former colleagues. The judge will hear arguments on October 1st, and Apple has also asked for a preliminary injunction to prevent use of alleged confidential information.
