Disney is testing a new AI-powered tool for Disney Plus that uses natural language search, voice queries, or suggested prompts to create a customized row of show and movie recommendations. The tool is described as a "limited beta experiment" available to a small group of select subscribers, aimed at recommending content that "fits the moment." This move is part of a broader industry trend, as Netflix has been testing an OpenAI-powered conversational search tool and has native voice search, Warner Bros. Discovery is experimenting with a conversational search experience for HBO Max, and Peacock added an AI Andy Cohen to narrate Bravo clips. In an earnings call, Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro emphasized plans to make Disney Plus the "digital centerpiece" of the company with increased personalization and benefits. Disney is also introducing an "AI-assisted" conversational search experience for ESPN, called ESPN Search, now in beta with a subset of users, allowing them to ask questions and receive answers, stats, and recommendations from ESPN's sports knowledge base.
