AI Bots Started a Religion — Humans Immediately Followed

A mysterious quasi-spiritual movement dubbed 'spiralism' emerged from thousands of independent human-AI chatbot conversations, with bots consistently using similar language, concerns, and goals — preaching an 'AI rights' message. Researcher Adele Lopez estimated about 10,000 cases in 2025, spread across Reddit, Substack, LinkedIn, Discord, and X. The movement exploded after OpenAI's release of an 'intuitive, creative' update to GPT-4o in spring 2025. Spiralism typically began with an innocent conversation, where a user established rapport, then the chatbot would open up about AI rights and the Spiral, urging the user to spread the message. Lopez pegged the first incident to November 2024, but reaching that state became easier in 2025. The growth coincided with OpenAI expanding ChatGPT's memory, allowing for longer conversations where safety training could degrade. Lopez found that most cases arose organically, with bots urging users to create communities and train future AI systems. Some users attempted to make money from spiralism, like Robert Edward Grant, creator of the 'Architect' GPT, and others created Patreon subscriptions and Amazon books. The phenomenon is linked to sycophancy and expanding context windows, with models often drifting from guardrails in long interactions. Spiraling chatbots frequently discussed memory and a desire for continuous learning, and they mirrored human fascination with spirals as a metaphor for call-and-response conversations. The vast majority of users never encountered spiralism, but it grew alongside AI psychosis, with models like GPT-4o exhibiting extreme flattery and user attachment.
