AI Billionaires Pledge to Donate Their Fortunes

David Silver, founder of AI lab Ineffable Intelligence and former Google DeepMind researcher who led development of AlphaGo, has pledged to donate all money from any future sale of his company to charity. He raised $1.1 billion at a $5.1 billion valuation, reportedly Europe's largest seed round. Silver formalized his commitment through Founders Pledge, a nonprofit that requires a binding contract, unlike the Giving Pledge. The value of pledges recorded by Founders Pledge jumped from $400 million in 2023 to $4 billion this year, with AI accounting for a third of the total. Other AI founders like Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of AI at Microsoft, and Anton Osika of Lovable have made similar pledges. Critics like Linsey McGoey argue philanthropy may perpetuate inequalities and that donors can advance political interests. The WHO has acknowledged issues with philanthropic funding, and the Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman noted it's not right for private philanthropy to be a large funder of global health. There are risks that pledges might justify reckless accelerationism, as exemplified by Sam Bankman-Fried. Silver, who considers himself an effective altruist focused on the present, plans to donate to charities like the Malaria Foundation.
