The FCC announced on July 28 a ban on imports of foreign-made mobile robots, citing an unacceptable threat to US national security. This affects brands with US headquarters, such as Shark and iRobot, whose products are manufactured abroad. The risks include not only cameras on robot vacuums but also sensors for obstacle avoidance and mapping. Manufacturers have responded to Mashable with assurances. Shark stated that currently sold robot vacuums remain for sale with support, and future models are under evaluation. Eufy noted that new FCC rules do not affect sales, operation, or support of current products in the US, with continued updates and transparency. iRobot is cooperating with the FCC to assess the impact. Narwal confirmed that its certified products are not affected, and existing models remain in retail. All purchased robot vacuums can be used without restrictions, and already imported models are sold freely, with software updates allowed until January 1, 2029.
