Spotify will label AI artists and remove their music from recommendations

Spotify announced it will label AI-generated artist profiles with an 'AI Persona' badge, starting mid-September, and exclude their music from editorial suggestions and personal recommendations. The platform will use human review and AI tools to determine if a profile appears to be a photorealistic AI-generated identity, applying a 'Likely AI Persona' badge when necessary. Artists can self-disclose as AI personas starting today, but Spotify will not rely solely on self-identification. The company will review artists meeting 'defined audience thresholds' first to cover the most listened-to profiles. Spotify says listeners have expressed dislike for discovering that a seemingly human artist is AI-generated. The move comes as AI music floods streaming platforms, with Deezer reporting that AI-generated tracks now account for half of its daily uploads. Spotify's new labels pertain only to artist identity, not the creation method of the music, and the platform currently lacks a system to identify AI-generated music like Deezer. Artists can appeal if they receive a 'Likely AI Persona' badge, and Spotify plans to add a feature for listeners to flag potential AI identities.
