Spotify to Label AI Personas and Exclude Their Music from Recommendations

Spotify announced on Tuesday that it will begin labeling AI-generated artists with "AI Persona" profile tags and banning their music from its editorial and algorithmic recommendations. Starting mid-September, users will see "AI Persona" badges on artist profiles that signal the artist's identity is AI-generated. Spotify says it won't rely on self-disclosure alone; it will also review profiles, prioritizing those with predefined audience thresholds. Once labeled, badges appear on the profile banner, About section, Search, and track rows. By default, AI Personas won't be included in editorial or algorithmic recommendations, unless a user explicitly follows them. This move expands Spotify's AI policies, which already ban unauthorized AI voice clones and deepfakes. Spotify aims to balance AI innovations like Prompted Playlists and AI DJ with curbing AI-generated slop. Artists can appeal their AI Persona label, and the badge is about the artist's public identity, not how the music was made. Spotify will also roll out a tool for users to report unlabeled AI Personas. The labels will appear starting next month, with self-disclosure available via Spotify for Artists starting August 11, 2026.
