Reddit Deploys AI to Evaluate Posts for Rule Compliance

Reddit has introduced a new system called Rules Hub that employs large language models (LLMs) to check posts and comments against community rules. The tool complements existing moderation, handles complex cases beyond keyword search, and is being tested in over 700 communities.
Reddit unveiled Rules Hub, a moderation tool that uses large language models (LLMs) to evaluate posts and comments for compliance with community rules. Unlike the existing AutoMod bot, which relies on predefined keywords and patterns, Rules Hub assesses the context of a post and matches it against the intent of specific community rules. Moderators still create the rules and determine actions to take upon violations. The system can automatically send posts for additional review, hide, or delete them, and allows moderators to test new rules on archived posts and view logs explaining AI decisions. Over the past months, Rules Hub was tested in more than 700 communities with moderators from the Mod Council Network program, and is now available for new subreddits, with broader rollout later this year. Reddit admits the system is not yet ready to replace existing moderation in large communities, but plans to integrate Rules Hub with other features such as Post and Comment Guidance and Safety Filters, aiming to gradually take over tasks currently handled by AutoMod, while final sanctions remain with human moderators.
