OpenAI's First AI Gadget by Jony Ive: Donut-Shaped, Moves, and Launches in 2027

OpenAI is preparing to release its first AI device, which will have a donut shape about the size of a hockey puck and moving elements to simulate lively communication. The company positions the product as an autonomous AI companion and plans to launch it in 2027. According to Bloomberg, the device will look like a smart speaker without a display, but with a more compact form factor, and thanks to a built-in battery, it can be used both stationary and in hand. The focus is on voice interaction, similar to ChatGPT's voice mode, with personalization over time. The device will have moving parts that change position during operation, light indicators, microphones, speakers, a camera, and other sensors to analyze the surroundings. Development is done jointly with Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio, featuring a premium metal body, with pricing between $300 and $400. The company plans a whole line of such devices, potentially replacing smartphones. Concurrently, OpenAI faces a lawsuit from Apple, which claims OpenAI used Apple's technologies; OpenAI rejects the allegations, stating they are vague and lack evidence. Despite the legal dispute, OpenAI continues the project, stating they are creating something 'completely new'.
