The device, designed with Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio, aims to act as a smartphone replacement with advanced AI models for humanlike interaction. OpenAI has declined to comment, and an internal probe found no use of Apple IP.
OpenAI's forthcoming smart speaker, as reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, is expected to be priced above $300, possibly up to $400. The generative AI company views the device as a potential smartphone replacement. The battery-powered speaker will feature a design like a doughnut roughly the size of a hockey puck, with independent moving parts and lights to indicate listening, aiming to seem 'more alive' than stationary speakers. It will operate similarly to ChatGPT's voice mode but with more advanced models for humanlike interactivity, and will also control smart home devices. The device was designed in collaboration with LoveFrom, the studio of former Apple designer Jony Ive, and uses premium materials like high-quality metal. Following Apple's lawsuit against OpenAI for trade secret theft, an internal probe concluded the speaker does not use Apple IP.
