OpenAI's CFO Sarah Friar told investors that revenue from corporate clients has overtaken consumer revenue, achieving a crossover earlier than expected. The company's annualized revenue reached $40 billion in July, with corporate segment growing 32%.
OpenAI's CFO Sarah Friar met with investors this week to provide an overview of the business, which is externally characterized by growing multi-billion expenses. The startup crossed the threshold where the corporate segment now brings in more revenue than the consumer segment. Friar said, 'We started the year with a 60:40 split, but the corporate segment accelerated much faster than expected, and now the lines have crossed. The majority of our revenue is in the corporate segment.' She previously expected the crossover to happen by end of 2026. The presentation, materials of which were obtained by CNBC, shows OpenAI's annualized revenue grew 20% in July, reaching $40 billion, with corporate revenue growing 32% that month. At the Friday investor meeting, OpenAI president Greg Brockman thanked outgoing revenue chief Denise Dresser, who served about eight months; her replacement will be Dali Rajic, formerly of Wiz. COO Brad Lightcap left the company last month. During the meeting, executives discussed the impact of Chinese open-source AI models. Brockman rejected the notion that they pose a threat, calling false the claim that open models are more affordable. Executives declined to give an IPO timeline, citing regulatory commitments. Friar said revenue is growing and the business adapts to client needs, noting clients now prefer efficient AI use over maximum adoption. OpenAI is responding with more affordable subscriptions and more efficient AI coding agent solutions (54% more efficient). Friar also said advertising revenue reached $1 billion annualized; experiments with ads in ChatGPT began in February this year.
