New AI Library Lets You Chat with Theodore Roosevelt

The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, located in Medora, North Dakota, opened to the public on July 4. The building is covered with native grasses, illuminated by skylights, but the main feature is its technological content. The library is called 'living' and operates on artificial intelligence. The Box 1 system, created with support from Microsoft, unites hundreds of thousands of archival documents from 32 collections stored across 18 institutions. Thanks to AI, anyone can search and explore Roosevelt's documents using natural language. Box 1 also serves as the foundation for an immersive experience: visitors can talk to an AI avatar of Roosevelt, asking questions about his life and views. A senator who tested the avatar heard a joke about senators from the digital Roosevelt. Microsoft is the project's leading technology partner, and the company plans to publish documentation and open-source the software used. The library will be updated as new documents are added and AI evolves.
