Stack Overflow, a popular forum for programmers, switched to 'Read Only' mode for about 12 hours, during which users could not ask new questions or answer existing ones. The owners did not explain the reason, but it is likely a protest against the dominance of neural networks. The number of new questions has dropped dramatically: from about 200,000 per month in 2014 to 3-4 thousand by late 2025. Developers increasingly prefer AI services like ChatGPT and Claude over human help. In 2023, Stack Overflow banned AI companies from using its content for training, but in 2024, OpenAI made a deal to use Stack Overflow data for ChatGPT training. Temporary bans were also placed on AI-generated answers on the forum. In early 2025, there were rumors of possible closure, and in May 2025, the site introduced reward systems and personalized pages to attract users, but without success. Russian Java developers also shifted to AI, with 73% using it as a full replacement by August 2026.
