Mistral is having a moment, as US restrictions on Anthropic and OpenAI models and safety incidents involving those models have opened a window of opportunity for the French lab. Mistral frames itself as an antidote, offering open-source models that cannot be switched off unilaterally, and sees open source as essential to avoid giving too much power to statelike companies. In September, Mistral raised almost $2 billion at a $13.5 billion valuation, with plans for another raise to $23 billion, and revenue has reportedly increased 20-fold in the past year. The lab has shifted focus to smaller, bespoke models for enterprises and developed a cloud business and a consulting team. The adoption of open-weight models is rising, partly due to Chinese models like DeepSeek, and Mistral's CEO Arthur Mensch argues that AI systems can be built outside US control, changing the market structure.
