Microsoft Merges Copilot Variants into a Single 'Super App'

Microsoft has started consolidating its consumer and commercial Copilot AI assistant versions into a single 'super app' interface. Initially, this will affect the Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot applications. Personal and corporate accounts will be moved into a new unified app called Microsoft Copilot, which gets a refreshed icon design. The unified app means that there will no longer be two Copilot icons on the taskbar and system tray. According to Microsoft, the updated app combines the best chat capabilities of Copilot with Microsoft 365 work features. These changes are intended as a technical step to prepare for the launch of the 'super app' later this year. The global rollout for mobile and web apps begins in mid-August, while Windows and macOS versions are slated for mid-September. Mobile users will be prompted to download the new Copilot app, and some Windows Insider preview participants can update as early as this week. CEO Satya Nadella confirmed these plans during the company's July 29 financial report, calling it an important step forward. Microsoft previously stated its intention to unify disparate AI tools such as the chatbot, the research tool Cowork, the code generation assistant, and autonomous agents Autopilots within a single interface. This approach aims to save users from switching between apps and make interaction with Copilot more consistent. It is also part of a broader industry trend; recently OpenAI launched a 'super app' that merged ChatGPT and Codex.
