Google announces governance changes at Google DeepMind, with Demis Hassabis stepping down as CEO to become President and Chief Scientist at Alphabet. Several top AI researchers, including Jeff Dean, are leaving the company to join new ventures, causing Alphabet's stock to fall about 4%.
Google has announced a governance evolution at Google DeepMind, highlighted by a change in role for Demis Hassabis, co-founder of the lab. According to the Financial Times, Hassabis is stepping down as CEO of Google DeepMind to take a step back from daily management, becoming President of DeepMind and Chief Scientist at Alphabet to focus on long-term research directions, including work on general AI. Koray Kavukcuoglu, formerly CTO of Google DeepMind and chief AI architect, is promoted to SVP and will report directly to Sundar Pichai, tasked with overseeing operations and accelerating AI development and deployment. This reorganization comes amid a wave of departures, including Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist and a 27-year veteran, who has left with three close collaborators: Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals, all of whom are joining Discovery Loop, a company focused on using AI to automate scientific research and engineering tasks. Oriol Vinyals is also reportedly joining 224 Ventures, a new AI-focused investment firm. These movements reflect Google's transition period since the rise of generative AI, with the emergence of services like ChatGPT shifting market dynamics. Alphabet's stock dropped about 4% after the announcement.
