Expected to launch in 2027 for over $300, it will have moving parts and advanced AI for humanlike interaction.
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reports that the AI device OpenAI is developing with former Apple designer Jony Ive is essentially a smart speaker without a display, battery-powered, doughnut-shaped, and roughly the size of a hockey puck. Expected to launch in 2027 at a price over $300, the device will have a unique look with moving parts, some of which move on their own to indicate when it is responding or interacting with the user, along with lights, a camera system, and other sensors. It is designed to be easy to carry around the home with one hand, similar to Amazon's discontinued Tap speaker. The device will work similarly to ChatGPT's voice mode on smartphone apps but with more advanced models for humanlike interactivity, and its look and feel will be nothing like an Apple product despite the ongoing lawsuit. This speaker could be the first in a family of devices OpenAI has planned.
