Jensen Huang's Coalition for Open AI Weights Doubles in a Day — Google Joins, but Amazon and Anthropic Remain Silent

A day after Jensen Huang published his letter "Open Weights and American AI Leadership," the number of signatories doubled from 25 to 50. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated that the company has long supported open source and releases open weights for Gemma. Demis Hassabis noted that Gemma has been downloaded over 300 million times and listed DeepMind's open projects: JAX, Transformers, and AlphaFold. However, Hassabis also proposed a standardization framework that, he said, supports responsible deployment of both open and proprietary models—effectively not abandoning his recent idea of an industry body modeled after FINRA. Amazon and Anthropic have yet to sign the letter, even though Amazon is Anthropic's largest investor. Instead of an official position from Anthropic, its employee Julian Schrittwieser tweeted sarcastically congratulating Huang on his belief in open source and expressing impatience for the opening of CUDA and GPU drivers, as well as Windows and Office. Coursera co-founder Andrew Ng replied that everyone is entitled to keep their code closed, and problems only start when someone prevents others from opening up. Investor Bill Gurley noted that Anthropic has finally acknowledged the real issue with openness—it competes with its own economics. Meanwhile, users noticed that Andrej Karpathy removed any mention of Anthropic from his X profile, sparking rumors of his departure, but he denied them, calling it "strange misinformation." Against this backdrop, Anthropic and OpenAI, according to CNBC, raised their federal lobbying spending to record levels in the second quarter, and a bill was introduced in Congress for an emergency shutdown switch for AI models, which effectively limits the capabilities of open weights.
