Google Begins Splitting DeepMind, Several Teams Transferred to Headquarters

According to Reuters, at a Google DeepMind all-hands meeting on August 6, management announced that several non-technical teams would be moved out of DeepMind and into Google's corporate reporting structure. The research teams remain, but support teams are being transferred. Google has not detailed which teams are affected or the reasons, but the move aims to reduce intermediary layers between DeepMind and Google product divisions to accelerate Gemini's integration into Search, Cloud, and other products. Koray Kavukcuoglu, who succeeded Demis Hassabis as head of DeepMind, is becoming a central figure in shaping Gemini's direction, with final say on major decisions. Meanwhile, co-founder Sergey Brin, without a formal executive title, has re-engaged in Gemini model training and resource allocation, pushing for advances in recursive self-improvement. According to Reuters, a new version of Gemini is delayed by two months as of August, and internal tests show it lags competitors in coding. Google has reportedly canceled the release of Gemini 3.5 Pro, and reasons cited for the lag include TPU compute constraints, internal disagreements among project leads, and bureaucratic inefficiencies.
