Google Assistant to Be Replaced by Gemini: What Users Need to Know

Google Assistant, launched in 2016, is being phased out in favor of Gemini, a decision influenced by the success of ChatGPT and other AI chatbots. The transition, initially planned for completion by the end of 2025, has faced delays due to migration issues. Starting September 4, 2026, Google will begin rolling out Gemini to compatible Android devices, with emails informing users of the change. Once the switch occurs, it is irreversible, and Google Assistant will no longer be available on smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, headphones, or earbuds. Gemini will become the default assistant, activated via the 'Hey Google' voice command or a long press of the power button. The migration to Android Automotive is slower, and older devices lacking Android 10 or with less than 2GB RAM will not support Gemini.
