Demis Hassabis, CEO of DeepMind, is stepping down from daily leadership to take an oversight role at Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu will lead DeepMind. This comes amid a series of high-profile departures from Google's AI teams.
DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has announced he will hand over day-to-day responsibilities to take on an oversight role at parent company Alphabet, as Google faces a continued exodus of senior AI talent. Hassabis, a co-founder of DeepMind, will remain in charge of Isomorphic Labs, which applies AI to biomedical problems. Koray Kavukcuoglu will serve as DeepMind's senior vice president, reporting directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, while Hassabis becomes chair of DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet. In his memo, Hassabis reiterated his belief that artificial general intelligence (AGI) is close at hand.
