Gemini Assistant Is Not Inside Siri AI, Says Apple

Apple uses Google's Gemini frontier models, but emphasizes that they are trained with proprietary data and protected, so the new Siri AI is not identical to Gemini Assistant. Instead, Apple has optimized its own Apple Foundation Models (AFM) using Gemini technology, both server-side and locally.
Apple will release its new operating systems in September, including the long-awaited AI models improved in collaboration with Google. Despite the fact that the AI system partially uses Gemini technology server-side, Siri AI will not be identical to Gemini Assistant. Apple has used Google's models to optimize its existing Apple Foundation Models (AFM), which include both server and local models. In June, Apple told journalists that the amount of Google Assistant (meaning Gemini Assistant) they use is "zero" — they do not use Google's client-side code nor its search infrastructure, having built their own search help. Apple's new AI vice president Amar Subramanya, formerly of Google DeepMind, stated that the new Siri AI app does not correspond to the Gemini app. Apple has collected its own training material and knowledge base, operating its own AI crawler. Although Apple reportedly pays Google one billion US dollars per year for Gemini use, observers estimate Apple will try to switch entirely to its own models once they become competitive. Siri AI, available as a public beta, makes a much better impression than old Siri and is now considered competitive, but initially only in US English and not in the EU on iPhone and iPad for regulatory reasons.
