On the Arena text model leaderboard, Qwen3.8-Max trails only Fable 5 and three models in Anthropic's Opus family. For frontend coding, it is beaten only by two Claude Opus models and Kimi K3, and for visual analysis, only Fable 5 trounces it. Qwen3.8-Max has 2.4 trillion parameters, while Moonshot's Kimi K3 has 2.8 trillion; most top American labs keep such figures private. The company will release the weights next week, marking a return to open-weight releases after briefly pivoting to proprietary releases earlier this year. Open-weight releases have become the norm in China's AI industry and are championed by Beijing to grow influence and adoption. The release closely follows Kimi K3 and coincides with video generation models from ByteDance and MiniMax, intensifying rivalry with the US. Openness has become divisive, with the US industry largely supporting open-weight models amid potential crackdowns, while closed-model providers like OpenAI and Anthropic face scrutiny after cyberattacks by their own AI agents.
