ChatGPT: OpenAI Releases Desktop App for Linux

OpenAI has published its desktop app for Linux, called ChatGPT. The application is now available worldwide as a preview, marking the final major desktop OS supported. At launch, only a curated set of Linux distributions are supported: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. The app can be installed as DEB or RPM packages, for both x64 and ARM64 architectures. The download link is located on the official Codex webpage and appears only when accessed from a Linux system. The desktop app unifies three areas: ChatGPT (classic assistant), ChatGPT Work (for longer, multi-step tasks, optionally accessing local files and programs with user consent), and Codex (for software development). In July, OpenAI merged the Codex app with ChatGPT and ChatGPT Work into a new desktop app, renaming it ChatGPT; the previous ChatGPT app received the name ChatGPT Classic and continues to receive new models, fixes, and security updates. OpenAI offers both desktop apps in parallel on its official download page. The old desktop app was first released for macOS in May 2024, for Windows in October 2024, and now, nearly two years later, for Linux.
