Breaking: Jeff Dean Leaves Google to Start a Company, Evaporating $134 Billion in Market Value

Jeff Dean, Google's legendary scientist and one of only two Senior Google Fellows, has announced his departure from the company to start a new venture called Discovery Loop, a public-benefit company focused on automating machine learning, science, and engineering. He is joined by Sanjay Ghemawat, another Senior Google Fellow, and Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals, all prominent figures in Google's AI research. Concurrently, Demis Hassabis has stepped down as CEO of Google DeepMind to become Chairman and Chief Scientist at Alphabet, focusing on AGI strategy and scientific breakthroughs. His deputy Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over his responsibilities and report directly to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The news caused Google's stock to fall 4%, erasing $186 billion in market value. Google has invested in Discovery Loop and will be its cloud partner. The founders mentioned that they left to have more freedom and fun in a startup, despite efforts by Google to retain them. This move follows the departure of other key AI figures from Google to OpenAI and Anthropic, highlighting growing talent retention challenges. As a result, Google is reorganizing its AI leadership, with Hassabis now focusing on long-term AGI strategy and directing research efforts at Isomorphic Labs, while Kavukcuoglu handles Gemini development and frontier AI research.
