Backflip AI converts 3D scans into editable CAD models in minutes
Backflip AI
The AI startup Backflip AI has released its second AI model for CAD generation, which converts 3D scans and mesh files into fully editable, parametric CAD models within minutes. This reduces a process that normally takes a long time and requires much CAD experience to a few minutes, addressing the need for digital models in factories.
Backflip AI has introduced its second AI model designed for CAD generation, enabling the conversion of 3D scans and mesh files into fully editable parametric CAD models. Traditionally, such conversions are time-consuming and demand significant CAD expertise, but Backflip claims to reduce the process to just a few minutes. According to CEO Greg Mark, most factories have digital models for less than one percent of their parts, indicating a high demand. In industries like automotive and aerospace, digitizing components is crucial for prototyping and designing new parts. Unlike previous AI models that only generate surfaces from triangles, Backflip produces genuine CAD operations such as extrusion and revolution, allowing results to be quickly modified. The tool operates as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion. Four reconstructions are available for free, with paid plans starting at $20 per month. The startup, active since December 2024, is funded with $30 million.
