Anthropic to Design Custom Silicon for Claude Models

Anthropic has confirmed it is hiring a 'custom silicon team' to design chips for running its AI models, a move that validates previous rumors reported by The Information about a potential partnership with Samsung for hardware manufacturing. The company's spokesperson stated that Anthropic will still take a 'multi-chip approach,' using hardware from other companies alongside its own designs as it scales up. The confirmation came after Business Insider noticed job listings for a senior engineer with experience in semiconductor designs, as well as a silicon engineer and a technical program manager. Anthropic joins a trend among AI developers: OpenAI recently announced a custom chip called Jalapeño for inference in data centers, developed with Broadcom, while Google has long run models on its own hardware, Meta has deployed its own chips, and Mistral is reportedly exploring similar options.
