The AI has been installed on the Victor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope in Chile and is already matching human dispatchers in decision-making capability.
According to a report by Phys.org on August 1, researchers from Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and Fermilab have created an artificial intelligence scheduling system that can take over a telescope and plan its pointing direction. The team describes this as an important milestone toward 'autonomous observatories.' The system's decision-making ability is now comparable to that of human dispatchers. It has been put in charge of the Victor M. Blanco 4-meter Telescope in Chile, directing the 570-megapixel Dark Energy Camera in its observations.
