US Court sides with SerpApi Creator in Google Data Scraping Lawsuit

A US court ruled that Google's DMCA lawsuit against SerpApi was unfounded because Google does not own copyright in search results. Google had sued SerpApi in December, accusing it of bypassing anti-scraping protections and selling content via an unauthorized Google Search API. Reddit also sued SerpApi and Perplexity in October on similar grounds. The court dismissed Google's case early, stating Google failed to prove it acts on behalf of copyright holders. Google has 21 days to amend its complaint. Experts note Reddit's case is also weak since Reddit does not own the content in search results. SerpApi stated that Google and Reddit do not own the internet and that their DMCA use threatens open internet. SerpApi's clients include Nvidia, Uber, and Adobe.
