Seagate sells out almost all HDDs it will produce until 2028 and reveals timing for 50TB drives

Seagate announced that qualification tests for 50TB hard drives will begin in late 2027, with volume shipments in 2028. Demand is so high due to AI and cloud infrastructure that most future HDD supply is already sold out through 2028, and negotiations are underway for 2029 deliveries. The company also reported strong financial results for fiscal Q4 2026.
Seagate CEO Dave Mosley said during an earnings call that qualification testing for the Mozaic 5 platform, which uses HAMR technology and enables platters over 5TB, is scheduled for late 2027. This will allow production of 50TB drives with 10 platters, using either CMR for performance or SMR for maximum capacity. Most of Seagate's upcoming HDDs are already reserved through long-term supply agreements (LTAs) for 2027 and 2028, with some customers pushing to secure supply for 2029. The company plans to gradually increase the share of HAMR-based drives in its portfolio, reaching 40% by early July 2027 and 70% of exabyte shipments by late 2026, with about half of future models being 40TB Mozaic 4 drives. Seagate's fiscal Q4 2026 revenue was $3.629 billion with net income of $1.294 billion, while full-year revenue was $12.195 billion with net income of $3.184 billion.
