Runway has introduced Media Router, a tool for automatically selecting the best image, video, or audio generation model based on developer priorities (quality, speed, or cost). The solution is available via the Runway Dev platform, which provides API access to third-party models. The company aims to become an infrastructure layer for generative media, rather than just another model developer.
Runway has launched Runway Media Router, a tool that automatically selects the optimal model for generating images, videos, or audio based on developer-defined priorities: quality, speed, or cost. The router is available through the Runway Dev platform, launched earlier this month, which provides API access to third-party models as well as Runway's own models. According to product director Anthony Maggio, this is the first router specifically designed for generative media. Runway aims to become a single integration point for developers working with any type of generative media model. The platform is already used by clients such as Adobe, Cloudflare, ElevenLabs, Expedia, Shutterstock, and Quora. Maggio noted the growing popularity of Chinese generative media models but acknowledged that some companies may set a preference for American providers due to potential sanctions. Developers can configure the router to account for token pricing and quality. The launch comes a few weeks after Runway transitioned to a token-based payment model instead of unlimited subscriptions. The router's intelligence layer is based on the experience of Runway's own creative team in evaluating outputs from various media types. Similar technology was previously used in Runway's agent product. Although Runway's latest frontier video model, Gen 4.5, was released in December and topped rankings, models from Google, ByteDance, and Alibaba now occupy the top positions. Co-editor and co-CEO Anastasis Germanidis emphasized that model orchestration is becoming increasingly important as users create entire campaigns with these tools. The router is one way the company is providing users with the benefits of this orchestration.
