Pimax Crystal Super: New Ultrawide Optics Expands VR Headset Field of View to 140 Degrees

Pimax unveiled a new optical engine for its Crystal Super VR headset, called the Ultrawide module, which increases the horizontal field of view from 127 to 140 degrees while maintaining the 50 PPD (pixels per degree) sharpness. This was achieved by slightly adjusting the position of QLED panels and lenses and reducing stereo overlap from 105 to 90 degrees. The Ultrawide engine uses the same QLED panels and aspherical glass lenses as the standard 50-PPD variant, with edge-to-edge clarity unchanged. The Ultrawide engine is part of Pimax's modular concept for the Crystal Super, where different optical engines can be swapped. Pimax plans additional modules: a 57-PPD QLED variant with a 120-degree field of view and a Micro-OLED engine with a 105-degree field of view and lighter weight of about 700 grams. Pre-order customers can test the different optical engines for a small deposit and shipping fee. The Ultrawide engine is set to ship in July 2025, the 57-PPD QLED engine in June, and Micro-OLED modules later in the summer. Pimax also announced software and hardware improvements for the Crystal Super, addressing previously reported bugs, including improved color profiles, speaker output, microphone performance, controller tracking, and a live customer support chat in the Pimax Play app. Hardware improvements include reinstating the DMAS audio solution in all pre-orders and revised face cushions with better magnets and new foam, which will be added to all Crystal Super shipments and retrofitted to earlier versions.
