Selected researchers from eligible institutions will receive practical support, access to the latest GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model, and can bring up to four colleagues from their institution. The program will start by the end of summer with 10,000 participants and expand to 100,000 by 2027. The free access is part of a commitment of over $250 million by 2027 to support external scientific research and discoveries. While some speculate OpenAI seeks new data sources, the company states that by default this information will not be used for that purpose. The initiative could lead to scientific breakthroughs and solidify OpenAI's commercial success. In January, OpenAI also introduced Prism, an AI service for working with scientific journals and documents, available for free to all ChatGPT users.
