Nadella: Companies Relying on a Single AI System May Not Survive

In an interview on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella reiterated his warning that companies wholly dependent on proprietary AI labs will not survive. He urged businesses to retain all metadata from AI model usage to eventually train their own weights or adopt open models, emphasizing that outsourcing thinking to an AI provider is dangerous. Nadella specifically advised against relying on built-in coding tools from AI labs like Anthropic's Claude Code or OpenAI's ChatGPT Codex, calling instead for separate infrastructure such as AI gateways to manage multiple models. He warned that model makers could eventually compete with their customers, echoing a common startup fear. However, he dismissed similar concerns for individual consumers, stating data sharing is the price of free services.
