Moonshot AI releases open-weight Kimi K3 with 2.8 trillion parameters

On July 27, 2026, Moonshot AI released the weights for their Kimi K3 model, which has 2.8 trillion parameters and weighs 1.56TB, available on Hugging Face. Unlike the previous K2 model that used a modified MIT license requiring attribution for commercial entities with over 100 million monthly active users or $20 million monthly revenue, the K3 license no longer calls itself modified MIT. It requires a separate agreement with Moonshot for any licensee or affiliate operating a Model-as-a-Service business with aggregate revenue exceeding $20 million over any consecutive 12 months before using the software for commercial purposes. Moonshot consistently uses the term 'open weight' rather than 'open source'. OpenRouter already offers K3 from seven providers, most at the same prices as Moonshot AI: $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.
