Microsoft reports $3.2B gain from Anthropic investment, OpenAI marks down $600M

Microsoft disclosed in its Q4 fiscal 2026 earnings that its investment in Anthropic resulted in a $3.2 billion gain, contributing 33 cents to diluted earnings per share. Microsoft invested $5 billion in Anthropic in November 2025, part of a deal where Anthropic agreed to buy $30 billion in Azure services. In contrast, Microsoft's investment in OpenAI was marked down by about $600 million, reducing EPS by 7 cents. Microsoft owns about 27% of OpenAI and receives revenue-share payments, but does not disclose the amount. Despite the quarterly write-down, for the full fiscal year, the OpenAI investment generated a $5 billion gain and added $0.67 per share. Microsoft reported quarterly revenue of $90 billion and net income of $35.8 billion, with annual revenue of $331.8 billion and net income of $133.7 billion.
