Ecovacs open-sources its robot: not humanoid, but aimed at real tasks

Chinese company Ecovacs (科沃斯), known for its robot vacuum cleaners, has announced the open-sourcing of its robot with embodied AI capabilities, called "Bajie" (八界). The robot has a wheeled base and a manipulator, and is not anthropomorphic. As part of the initiative, access is opened to hardware and software, including SDK, system code, and AI agents OpenClaw and Hermes. The company has also opened a physical space for developers in Suzhou. The goal is to attract the community to jointly develop the robot for solving real household tasks.
Ecovacs, a company specializing in household robots, has open-sourced its embodied intelligence robot 'Bajie' (八界). The robot is equipped with a six-axis manipulator with an 800 mm reach, a silent wheeled chassis, a lifting body (44 cm), and a two-finger gripper with UV cleaning. Inside, it features two SoC RK3588s supporting local deployment of 7B-parameter models. All levels are open: from hardware (mechanical arm, chassis, gripper) to software (system code, AI agents OpenClaw and Hermes) and SDKs in C++ and Python. Developers can control the robot through natural language, Secure Shell/Robot Operating System 2 (SSH/ROS2), or a visual interface. The company emphasizes that it does not aim for anthropomorphism: the robot should be a useful tool, not a copy of a human. The ecosystem also includes an online community, repositories on Atomgit/GitHub, and a skills marketplace. Ecovacs believes that the current stage of embodied artificial intelligence (AI) is still far from the 'ChatGPT moment' and that collaboration among developers is necessary for progress.
