Copilot Key in Windows 11 Can Finally Be Disabled or Remapped

Microsoft now allows disabling or remapping the physical Copilot key on keyboards of new PCs. Users can launch other applications, such as ChatGPT or Claude, by pressing this key, or disable it entirely. The setting is already available in the Windows Insider preview build.
Starting in 2024, new PCs ship with a Copilot key, and Microsoft considers it mandatory for the AI PC designation. However, the physical Copilot key has become a meme due to low popularity: even active chatbot users do not use it. In response, Microsoft decided not to remove the key but to allow its reassignment. Windows will gain the ability to configure the Copilot key to launch a preferred application, including OpenAI's ChatGPT or Anthropic's Claude, revert it to a right Control key function, or choose the "Do nothing" action. This setting was spotted in a preview build of Windows for Windows Insider program participants. Selecting "Do nothing" completely disables the Copilot key. The release date for this feature in stable builds has not been announced. The developer warned that when reassigned to right Control, key combinations with left Shift may work incorrectly on some keyboards.
