Claude chats and Artifacts exposed publicly via Google

A large number of Claude chats and Artifacts were found publicly searchable on Google after Reddit users used search operators. The exposed data included health records, company documents, and children's personal information. Anthropic attributed the issue to users sharing links publicly, not to a flaw in the platform.
Over the weekend, Reddit users discovered that using Google search operators like "site:claude.ai/share" returned a long list of shared Claude conversations, including Artifacts. Some shared chats contained sensitive information such as health records, private company documents, and the names and phone numbers of children. The issue stemmed from Claude's "share chat" feature, which creates links that allow anyone with the URL to view a conversation. Anthropic stated that share links only appear in search results when posted on public forums or social media, and that links sent privately remain hidden. The company emphasized that users control sharing and that they do not share chat directories with search engines. As of Monday afternoon, TechCrunch's test search returned no results, indicating the exposure was remediated. Before the fix, Futurism found a detailed medical report, clinical trial results with patient names, documents with children's names and phone numbers, and internal company documents. Exposed Artifacts included code and work notes, and one chat labeled "shared by Anthropic" showed Claude producing erotica, which violates Anthropic's usage policy. Google stated it does not control which pages are public and provides tools for site owners to prevent crawling. A similar issue occurred last year when hundreds of Claude chats were indexed by search engines.
