Anthropic Takes One-Third of Global Venture Capital in Q2; What Remains for Europe

According to Crunchbase data published on July 2, 2026, global venture capital funding reached a record $510 billion in H1 2026, surpassing the $440 billion invested in all of 2025. Q1 2026 was the largest quarter ever with $305 billion, while Q2 saw $205 billion across over 5,000 startups. Over 70% of all startup capital in Q2 went to AI-focused companies. Anthropic announced a $65 billion Series H on May 28, 2026, valuing it at $965 billion post-money, nearly reaching $1 trillion. However, $15 billion of that round consisted of earlier hyperscaler commitments, including $5 billion from Amazon, reducing the net new money to about $30 billion. Anthropic's title as the most valuable private company partly stems from SpaceX going public and surpassing OpenAI. OpenAI and Anthropic together captured $217 billion in H1 2026, or 43% of all global startup funding. In Q2, two-thirds of startup capital went to US companies; among the 16 companies raising over $1 billion, eight were American, four Asian, and four European. France was not mentioned once in Crunchbase's semiannual report. The pattern suggests structural concentration rather than a bubble, with capital flowing to few foundational champions, raising dependency concerns for regulators. Europe's AI funding in 2025 was only about $5.9 billion (5% of global), compared to $97 billion in the US, according to France Digitale-EY. Anthropic's Series H alone was more than ten times all European AI venture capital for a year. France's champion Mistral AI, valued at about $14 billion after a €1.7 billion Series C in September 2025, is nearly 70 times less valuable than Anthropic. In 2025, France led Europe in AI funding with $2.1 billion across 24 deals, but without Mistral, French VC would have fallen 26% instead of 5%. Europe's public response, InvestAI launched at the Paris AI Action Summit on February 11, 2025, aims to mobilize €200 billion for AI, including a €20 billion public fund for four AI gigafactories, but these are not expected until 2027-2028. Europe's cumulative investment deficit is estimated at $375 billion over ten years, per Atomico. The $35 billion gap between Anthropic and the $1 trillion valuation is nearly six times all AI venture capital Europe captured in 2025.
