Anthropic Launches Cowork — AI Agent for File Work Without Programming

Anthropic released Cowork on Monday, a new AI agent capability that extends the capabilities of the successful Claude Code tool to non-technical users. According to company insiders, the entire feature was built in about a week and a half, largely using Claude Code itself. The launch marks an important turning point in the race to deliver practical AI agents to mainstream users, positioning Anthropic to compete not only with OpenAI and Google in conversational AI, but also with Microsoft Copilot in the growing market for AI-powered productivity tools. Cowork allows non-technical tasks to be performed similarly to how developers use Claude Code. The feature is available as a research preview exclusively to Claude Max subscribers—Anthropic's premium tier costing between $100 and $200 per month—through the macOS desktop application. Cowork's foundation lies in Anthropic's recent success within the developer community. In late 2024, the company released Claude Code, a terminal tool that allows software engineers to automate routine programming tasks. The tool was successful, but Anthropic noticed a curious trend: users were forcing the coding tool to perform non-coding work. According to Anthropic engineer Boris Cherni, the company observed users applying the developer tool to unexpectedly diverse tasks, including researching vacation options, creating slide presentations, and cleaning up email.
