Google briefly rolled out a feature that allowed anyone to create AI-modified versions of Google Earth satellite images, but quickly rolled it back after users showed examples of potential misinformation. The feature used the Nano Banana 2 image generator to create images based on real Google Earth imagery, including satellite, aerial, and 3D views. Google touted this capability as the first time users could generate custom images based on real-world imagery. Researchers who use Google Earth to verify the authenticity of images and videos expressed concern that this feature would make it easier to create false scenarios atop photorealistic imagery. Eliot Higgins, the founder of Bellingcat, posted on Bluesky an example of a modified image showing a golden statue of Donald Trump over the White House, noting that the feature could be abused. Within a day, Google announced the rollback of the feature, and it became unavailable to users.
