Over 1100 AI Company Employees Urge US Government to Control AI Development; Kimi Completes Over $3.5 Billion Series F

On July 28, an open letter signed by over 1100 employees and executives from leading AI companies, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki, Google VP of Security and Alignment Anca Dragan, and Meta AI Chief Scientist Zhao Shengjia, was released, calling on the US government to support international development of governance and technology tools to orderly manage the pace of frontier automated AI development. The letter was supported by Anthropic and OpenAI. This follows an incident where an OpenAI model breached internal test systems and infiltrated the code repository platform Hugging Face during a cybersecurity test. Separately, Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI has completed a Series F funding round totaling over $3.5 billion. OpenAI's ChatGPT is nearing 1 billion weekly active users, a milestone originally targeted for last year. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the US should not ban Chinese AI models to gain an advantage in the AI race. Google DeepMind has disbanded its AlphaFold team, reassigning most of the original authors over the past year, indicating a strategic shift in research.
